Daily Dose Hacks: DIY Solar Dehydrator: Preserving the Harvest

One of the simplest ways to preserve food for long-term storage is by dehydrating it. Drying reduces moisture, which prevents spoilage and extends shelf life. With just a few materials, you can make a solar dehydrator that uses the sun’s energy—free, renewable, and reliable.

How to Build a Simple Solar Dehydrator

  • Materials Needed:

    • Wooden frame (a box or simple rectangle works)

    • Window screen (to hold food and allow airflow)

    • Clear plastic sheet or old glass window (to trap solar heat)

  • Steps:

    1. Build a shallow wooden frame large enough to hold several layers of food.

    2. Stretch the window screen across the frame to create trays for fruits, vegetables, or herbs.

    3. Cover the frame with clear plastic or a glass panel to create a greenhouse effect.

    4. Tilt the dehydrator toward the sun and allow warm air to circulate through the trays.

    5. Rotate or stir food occasionally for even drying.

Fruits like apples, peaches, and berries, as well as vegetables, herbs, and even meat (jerky), can be dried this way and stored for months.

Spiritual Lesson from Food Preservation

Just as drying food preserves it for later, God preserves His people for eternal life. We must be prepared, storing not only physical food but also the Word of God in our hearts.

“Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:6, KJV

Ellen G. White counseled on preparation and foresight:

  • “Again and again the Lord has instructed that our people are to take their families away from the cities, into the country, where they can raise their own provisions; for in the future, the problem of buying and selling will be a very serious one.” (Country Living, p. 9)

Dehydrating food today is a reminder of preparing spiritually for tomorrow.

Closing Thought

A solar dehydrator uses simple materials to secure tomorrow’s meals. Likewise, faith uses simple obedience to secure eternal life. By preserving food for your family, and Scripture for your soul, you prepare for both earthly survival and heavenly reward.
