In a season when every dollar counts, learning to make your groceries last longer is more than just thrift — it’s stewardship. Many families are feeling the weight of rising prices and uncertain times, but God has given us both wisdom and practical means to preserve what we have.
“Economy is not stinginess; it is simply the avoidance of waste.” — Ellen G. White, Counsels on Stewardship, p. 257

1. Soak Smart
Soaking beans, lentils, oats, and grains before cooking not only saves time and energy — it increases volume, improves digestion, and enhances flavor. Soaked grains expand, meaning you get more servings from the same amount of food.
Tip: Soak overnight in cool water, drain, and cook fresh the next day for maximum yield.
2. Freeze Wisely
Freezing is one of the simplest ways to protect your investment. Don’t wait until produce spoils — freeze it early! Chop fruits like bananas, apples, or berries for smoothies, and blanch vegetables before freezing to preserve color and nutrients.
Quick list of what freezes well:
Bananas (peeled)
Spinach, kale, broccoli (lightly blanched)
Cooked beans and rice (in single portions)
Soups and stews (label with date and contents)
3. Rotate Regularly
The key to avoiding waste is rotation. When you restock, move older items to the front and newer ones to the back. Check expiration dates weekly. Keep a small “eat soon” box in the fridge for items that need to be used first.
This practice not only keeps food fresh but also cultivates mindfulness and gratitude — using all that the Lord provides.
4. Stewardship and Simplicity
Stretching your groceries is an act of stewardship, not scarcity. God multiplies what we manage with care. When we live thoughtfully, even in lean seasons, we make room for abundance.
“He who gathers little by little shall increase.” — Proverbs 13:11
