Refrigerators require power, but in the country, you can use the earth itself to keep food fresh. A root cellar takes advantage of underground coolness and humidity for long-term storage.

How to Build a Simple Root Cellar
Materials: Shovel, barrels or crates, straw, boards.
Steps:
Dig into a hillside or bury a large barrel partly underground.
Line with straw or sawdust for insulation.
Store root vegetables, canned goods, and grains in a cool, dark environment.
Ventilate slightly to prevent mold.
Spiritual Lesson
God provided the earth itself as a storehouse. Just as the root cellar preserves food, Christ preserves our souls.
“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.” – Psalm 121:7, KJV
Ellen G. White urged simplicity and self-sufficiency:
“Again and again the Lord has instructed that our people are to take their families away from the cities, into the country, where they can raise their own provisions.” (Country Living, p. 9)
A root cellar teaches us to depend less on man’s inventions and more on God’s natural systems.
Closing Thought
A root cellar safeguards physical nourishment; God safeguards eternal life. Both require trust in His design.
