Reflection on Matthew 10:13–16 (KJV) and the Counsel of Ellen G. White
In Gospel of Matthew 10:13–16 (KJV), Christ instructs His disciples on how to approach people as they carry the message of the kingdom. He tells them that when a house is worthy, their peace should rest upon it, but if it is not worthy, that peace should return to them. He then warns that those who reject the message will face greater judgment than even Sodom and Gomorrah. Finally, Christ declares, “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”

Although this passage primarily addresses the disciples’ mission, it reveals a principle that also connects with Christ’s teaching about receiving the kingdom with childlike humility. The gospel is not accepted through pride or worldly wisdom but through a heart that is simple, trusting, and receptive, like that of a child. The disciples were to bring peace, blessing homes and families, including children, with the message of salvation. When people received that message, they were receiving the kingdom of heaven itself.
The Childlike Spirit and End-Time Preparation
In the context of end-time prophecy, this passage reminds believers that the final proclamation of the gospel will meet both acceptance and rejection. Christ warned that His followers would be “sheep among wolves,” meaning that those who proclaim truth in the last days will face opposition. Yet they must still reflect the character of Christ, wise, gentle, and harmless.
Children illustrate the attitude God desires in His people during these final days. A child trusts, learns, and depends on guidance. In the same way, God’s people must rely completely on Him as the world becomes increasingly hostile to biblical truth. The blessing of children is therefore symbolic of the purity and humility that the remnant church must cultivate while preparing for Christ’s return.
Counsel from Ellen G. White
In the writings of Ellen G. White, the importance of children and childlike faith is emphasized repeatedly. She taught that children should be brought to Christ early and that their simple faith is precious in the sight of heaven. She wrote that Christ regards the children as members of His family and that their hearts are often more open to truth than those of adults hardened by the world.
Ellen White also warned that in the closing scenes of earth’s history, families must train their children in righteousness and obedience to God’s commandments. Homes that welcome Christ’s peace like the “worthy house” described in Matthew 10 become centers of light in a darkening world. She explains that children who are taught to love and obey God will become strong witnesses for truth in the last days.
