Bearing the Cross Without a Murmur

Every follower of Christ is called to bear a cross. While no one can share in Christ's atoning sacrifice, every believer is invited to share in His spirit of humble obedience, patient endurance, and unwavering trust in the Father. The Christian life is not one of ease, but of surrender. Jesus gave this solemn invitation:

Matthew 16:24 (KJV) "Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."

The cross we are called to bear may come in the form of trials, disappointments, sacrifice, misunderstanding, loss, or faithful obedience when it is unpopular. Yet Christ never asks us to carry a burden that He has not first carried Himself. The apostle Peter reminds believers:

1 Peter 2:21 (KJV)"For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps."

Ellen G. White counseled God's people to meet life's appointed duties and trials without murmuring or complaining. She wrote:

"We are not to choose our own crosses, but to take up the cross that God appoints us, and bear it cheerfully." (The Ministry of Healing)

She also reminds us that every trial God permits has a purpose: to refine character, deepen faith, and prepare His people for heaven. Murmuring reveals distrust, while cheerful submission testifies that we believe our heavenly Father knows what is best.

The Israelites delayed their entrance into Canaan because of unbelief and continual complaining. In contrast, Christ endured the greatest suffering without rebellion against His Father's will. His example calls us to accept God's providence with gratitude, knowing that "all things work together for good to them that love God" (Romans 8:28).

Country Living and Preparation

The counsel to prepare for country living is not only about changing locations; it is about developing Christlike character. Leaving the cities behind, simplifying our lives, learning practical skills, and becoming more self-supporting all involve sacrifices and unexpected difficulties. These experiences become crosses that train us to depend more fully upon God. Those who accept these inconveniences without murmuring are allowing the Lord to prepare them for the greater tests that lie ahead. True preparation is not measured by the supplies we gather but by the faith, patience, obedience, and trust we cultivate while bearing the cross Christ has appointed us. As we faithfully carry today's cross, God is preparing us to stand faithfully in tomorrow's crisis.

May we daily hear Christ's invitation, take up the cross He has chosen for us, and follow Him with willing hearts, without complaint, without fear, and with the joyful assurance that every burden borne in His strength is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory.
