SHE LOOKETH WELL TO HER HOUSEHOLD: PREPARING THE HOME ITSELF

DAY THREE

Scripture for Today

“She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.”— Proverbs 31:27, KJV

Winter preparation does not end with clothing. The family lives somewhere. That home must also be considered. A warm coat cannot compensate for a house that cannot retain adequate heat. The wise household therefore examines the entire living environment.

“She Looketh Well”

Those words deserve attention. She "looketh well". She notices. She observes. She examines. She identifies problems before they become crises. That is an important aspect of household management. She is not idle, not sitting around wasting precious time she cannot get back. She is always educating herself and seeing what needs to be done.

Preparing the Heat

If a household relies upon a wood-burning furnace, wood stove, fireplace, or similar heating arrangement, preparation may need to begin months before winter. Obtain firewood a full year or two before the season begins so it can dry out and be ready to burn and replace what will be used during the current year. The wood must be properly stored. Inspect and maintain the heating equipment properly. Chimneys or flues may require attention. The flue is the internal passage that safely channels smoke and gases out of the home. Safety must remain the top priority.

A prepared household asks:

“What can we address now that would become much more difficult during severe weather?”

A Clean Home Is Part of Preparation

Winter often means people spend more time indoors. Therefore, cleanliness becomes particularly important.

“She looketh well to the ways of her household...”

Keeping the home orderly and sanitary includes routine cleaning, moisture management, appropriate ventilation for healthy air, addressing mold or mildew, changing HVAC filters where applicable, cleaning frequently used areas, maintaining bedding, and keeping food preparation areas sanitary.

Cleanliness is not just about appearance. It contributes to an orderly and healthful household.

A Note About Cedar

Cedar has historically been valued in building and household applications for characteristics including its aroma and natural resistance to certain insects and decay.

Where appropriate, cedar may be incorporated into closets, storage areas, furnishings, or other suitable applications.

However, cedar should not be regarded as a substitute for ventilation, sanitation, moisture control, mold remediation, filtration, or appropriate medical and environmental-health measures.

Biblical household wisdom should always be combined with truthful, responsible use of the natural resources God has provided.

Make the Home a Refuge

There is something beautiful about a home prepared for winter. Outside, snow may be falling. The wind may be blowing. Temperatures may be dropping. But inside, the children are warm. There is appropriate food. There are blankets. The home is clean. Necessary supplies are available. The family is together. Scripture is opened. Prayer is offered. The household becomes more than shelter from weather. It becomes a place of peace.

Today's Principle

The virtuous woman does not only live in her home, but she watches over it. She prayerfully creates an environment of warmth, order, health, and security for those entrusted to her care.
