Scripture for Today

“She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.”— Proverbs 31:16, KJV

One of the greatest misconceptions about Proverbs 31 is that this woman succeeds simply because she has money. Read the chapter carefully. Again and again, Scripture emphasizes what she does. She seeks. She works. She brings. She rises. She considers. She buys. She plants. She perceives. She makes. She sells. She gives. She watches. She plans. She is a remarkably resourceful woman.

“She Considereth”

Before she buys the field, she considereth it. That is financial wisdom. She evaluates before she purchases. She does not appear driven by impulse. This is an essential principle for a household operating with limited resources. Before spending, ask: Do we actually need this? Do we already own something that can serve this purpose? Can it be repaired? Can we make it? Can we borrow it? Can we buy it used? Can we wait for a better price? Will a higher-quality version save money over time? Is this purchase consistent with our priorities?

Resourcefulness Is a Form of Wealth

Money is only one resource. A family may also possess:

Time. Skills. Knowledge. Land. Tools. Relationships. Materials. Experience. Creativity. The ability to repair. The ability to sew. The ability to cook. The ability to grow food. The ability to preserve. The ability to barter or exchange lawful goods and services. The ability to recognize value others overlook. These are resources. The Proverbs 31 woman understands this.

“She perceiveth that her merchandise is good...”— Proverbs 31:18, KJV

She knows value.

Begin Early When Money Is Limited

Limited finances make advance preparation more important, not less important.

If winter preparation costs $600, the household may not be able to produce $600 immediately. But beginning months ahead changes the problem. One month might be boots. Another might be coats. Another might be blankets. Another might be home repairs. Another might be firewood. Needs can be prioritized and addressed progressively. Planning converts one overwhelming expense into a series of manageable decisions.

Pray for Provision

Sometimes the need exceeds what the household can presently afford. That is when prayer becomes especially precious.

“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”— Philippians 4:19, KJV

Take specific needs before God. Not only: “Lord, help us.” But:

“Lord, this child needs winter boots.”
“Lord, we need sufficient heating fuel.”
“Lord, this window needs repair.”
“Lord, we need warmer bedding.”
“Lord, show me where to obtain what we need.”

God may answer through means we did not anticipate.

A sale.
A gift.
A community resource.
A friend.
A family member.
An opportunity to earn additional income.
An item discovered secondhand.
Materials that can be repurposed.
A skill God gives us the wisdom to use.

The Christian does not dictate how God must provide. Our role is to ask, work faithfully, remain watchful, and trust Him.

Waste Less

One way to increase available resources is to reduce waste. Small leaks in a household budget become large over time. Unnecessary purchases. Food waste. Items repeatedly replaced because they were not maintained. Subscriptions that are not needed. Energy waste. Impulse purchases. Buying without first checking what is already owned. The resourceful household pays attention to these things.

Teach the Children Too

Preparedness should not become one exhausted mother's burden while everyone else consumes without thought. Children can learn age-appropriate responsibility. They can help organize. They can care for clothing. They can help stack wood where appropriate and safely supervised. They can help inventory pantry supplies. They can learn not to waste food. They can learn gratitude. They can learn that resources are gifts from God. This transforms preparedness into education.

Today's Principle

Do not measure your household only by the money you possess. Ask God to show you the resources already within your hands and give you wisdom to use them faithfully.
