Daily Dose: Pressing On to Perfection: Hebrews 6:1 and the Call to End-Time Readiness

“Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God.”

Hebrews 6:1 (KJV)

This verse is not a dismissal of foundational truth. It summons to spiritual maturity. It calls God’s remnant people to advance beyond spiritual infancy and into a lived, experiential faith that prepares them to stand during the closing events of earth’s history. The apostle Paul is addressing believers who are in danger of stagnation, content to remain in spiritual infancy rather than pressing forward into maturity. In the context of end-time prophecy, this verse carries particular urgency, as God’s people are called to be fully prepared, both doctrinally and spiritually, for the closing scenes of earth’s history.

The phrase “leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ” calls believers to build upon the foundation and not remain perpetually anchored at the starting point of Christian experience. Just as a physical structure cannot rise without first being grounded, so the Christian life begins with repentance and faith. However, a structure that never rises beyond its foundation is incomplete. Hebrews 6:1 echoes the earlier warning in Hebrews 5, where believers are reproved for still needing milk rather than solid food. For Seventh-day Adventists, this underscores the danger of possessing correct doctrine without corresponding growth in character and experience.

Christian Perfection

  • Perfection as Character Maturity

    • Not sinless independence, but complete dependence on Christ.

    • Harmony with Ellen G. White’s teaching:

      • Perfection is the continual surrender of the will to God.

      • It is growth in love, obedience, and holiness.

  • Perfection and the Law of God

    • God’s law reflects His character.

    • Maturity involves internalizing the law, not merely outward compliance.

    • The Sabbath, as a sign of loyalty, becomes central in perfected obedience.

  • Christ Our Righteousness

    • Spiritual maturity is impossible apart from Christ’s indwelling presence.

    • Justification leads to sanctification; sanctification prepares for glorification.

This call to maturity is inseparably connected to the law of God and the gospel. The law reveals God’s character, while the gospel provides the power to live in harmony with that law. As believers mature, obedience becomes an expression of love rather than duty. The Sabbath, in particular, takes on deeper meaning as a sign of loyalty and trust in the Creator. Thus, perfection in the Adventist understanding is relational and transformative, grounded in Christ’s righteousness rather than human merit.

Hebrews 6:1 also speaks powerfully to the doctrine of the investigative judgment. Living in the antitypical Day of Atonement demands earnest self-examination and spiritual growth. A superficial or stagnant faith cannot endure the solemn realities of judgment-hour living. God is preparing a people who not only understand prophetic truth but who have allowed that truth to refine their characters. Spiritual maturity is essential for standing during the shaking, receiving the latter rain, and remaining faithful through the time of trouble.

Practically, this call to move beyond foundational beginnings requires intentional cooperation with God. Daily Bible study, earnest prayer, and obedience in practical areas of life, such as health, stewardship, and witness are evidences of spiritual growth. Preparation for the latter rain is inseparable from character development. The Holy Spirit empowers those who are already walking in the light they have received, not those who resist growth or remain content with minimal commitment.
