As Wax Receives the Seal

“As wax takes the impression of the seal, so the soul is to take the impression of the Spirit of God and retain the image of Christ.” — Maranatha, p. 227.3

In ancient times, warm wax was pressed with a king’s seal, permanently bearing the mark of its owner. Ellen G. White uses this beautiful illustration to describe the work of the Holy Spirit upon the heart. God desires every believer to become so surrendered to His will that His divine character is impressed upon the soul.

This transformation is not accomplished through human effort alone but through daily submission to the Holy Spirit. As we behold Christ in His Word, commune with Him in prayer, and obey His voice, the Spirit molds our thoughts, motives, and actions until we increasingly reflect His likeness.

The Scriptures declare:

2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV)

“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”

God is preparing a people whose characters reveal the life of Jesus. In these closing moments of earth’s history, outward profession is not enough. The image of Christ must be deeply impressed upon the heart so that it remains steadfast through every trial and temptation.

This truth has a direct connection to country living and spiritual preparation. While moving to the country provides opportunities for a quieter, more self-sustaining life, the greatest preparation is a transformation of character. Country living is designed to reduce many of the distractions and influences of the world, creating greater opportunities for prayer, Bible study, communion with God, and service to others. Just as softened wax receives the impression of a seal, the believer who daily seeks Christ in a simple, surrendered life is better positioned to receive the abiding impression of the Holy Spirit. In the final crisis, it will be about whether the image of Christ has been permanently impressed upon our hearts through complete surrender to God.

May our daily prayer be that our hearts remain soft and yielded like wax in the hands of the Master, allowing the Holy Spirit to seal us with the character of Christ until the day He returns.
