Revelation 7: Who Shall Be Able to Stand?

As the sixth seal closes in Revelation 6, a sobering question is asked:

"For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?"— Revelation 6:17 (KJV)

Revelation 7 provides God's answer. Before the final judgments are unleashed, the Lord pauses to reveal His care for His faithful people. Four angels hold back the winds of destruction while another angel ascends with "the seal of the living God," declaring:

"Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads."— Revelation 7:3 (KJV)

This sealing represents God's ownership, protection, and the settled loyalty of His people. Scripture consistently shows that God marks and preserves His faithful before judgment falls, as seen in the days of Noah, the Passover in Egypt, and Ezekiel's vision of those marked before Jerusalem's destruction.

John then hears the number of those sealed—144,000, twelve thousand from each of the twelve tribes of Israel (Revelation 7:4–8). Many understand this number symbolically, representing God's complete, faithful people at the end of time, while others interpret it literally. Regardless of the interpretation, the emphasis is on a people who remain loyal to Christ and are prepared to stand through earth's final crisis.

Next, John sees "a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues" (Revelation 7:9). Clothed in white robes and holding palm branches, they stand before the throne praising God for His salvation. Their white robes symbolize the righteousness of Christ, for they have "washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb" (Revelation 7:14).

These redeemed have come through great tribulation. Because of Christ's sacrifice, they will hunger no more, thirst no more, and the Lamb Himself will shepherd them to living fountains of waters.

The central message of Revelation 7 is one of hope. While judgment is certain,

God knows His people, seals them as His own, and promises to carry them safely through the final conflict. The chapter reminds every believer that the only ones who will stand in the day of God's judgment are those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ, accepted His righteousness, and remained faithful to Him.

Revelation 7 assures us that, amid the turmoil of the last days, God's grace, protection, and promises remain steadfast. Those who belong to the Lamb have nothing to fear, for He will lead them safely into His eternal kingdom, where "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes" (Revelation 7:17, KJV).
